I'm so glad you enjoyed the roller derby. For the record, it's not a girls' only sport any longer! Mens' leagues are popping up everywhere; our leage has a division for men and one for women. Double-header bouts, where you alternate periods between the men vs. men and women vs. women, are a great, crowd-pleasing way to do things. Just thought you might like to know.

Liz, I think of what you are describing as coaching, rather than criticism. I don't think of what I do as "criticizing" students; I think of it as coaching.

Les, I am flattered that you are reading my blog! And thank you for commenting. It is because of suggestions like yours that I decided to write this post in the first place. So many people struggle with this issue, I wanted to share the little advice I have to offer.

Thanks, Tiffany. That's a good point about recording myself. Thank you for the compliment too! I had a lot of fun making the podcast, and it was a good chance to hear my recorded voice. I didn't think my voice sounded as korny as I usually think it does.

Liz, I'm sorry to hear about the interview. I remind myself to speak slowly and enunciate. My mom pointed out earlier this year that I say "fur" instead of "for." I caught myself and realized that she was right! Listen carefully to your words as you speak. Practice public speaking. I now say "for" rather than "fur" -- practice makes perfect. It's a battle, one word at a time! You might also try recording yourself and listening back to the tape. That said, I thought your podcast was great.

Liz, I'm so sorry to hear about your job :( The only advice I can give you is just to notice little things about the mistakes people make when they speak and then try not to repeat them. My roommate used to drill into my head that you should never say "these ones" only "these _____" or "those." I never paid much attention until I started hearing other people say "these ones" and now I don't say it anymore because if I do I can here how annoying it sounds.

Liz, I use the same strategies! Great post. Also, when your mind is still feeling cluttered, you can always do a free write until your mind is clear.

If you need some blog post ideas, there are always Fortune 500 blogs to review!

Liz,
Thank you for commenting on my blog post about Miley's Vanity Fair shoot. I completely agree with you on the idea that all girls her age in Hollywood are subject to that stereotype. I think it's because there were so many others before her that made mistakes that people just expect her to mess up.

On another note, writer's block is the worst! It always comes at the worst times too, like when you need to crank out a paper or a blog post! I normally just take a break, eat some food or excerise and that helps me clear my mind. When your brain is overwhelmed with information it is impossible to perform your best work. By the looks for your blog though, it seems like you do a fine job conquering that writer's block. Your blog is well written!
